In In 2007, China's regulatory entity has separated regular medical devices from in vitro diagnostic products with different classification standards as well as filing regulations. Even though both medical devices and IVD products have three classifications, the way they are classified are quite different. For medical devices, only long-term implanted, and first launched products require clinical trials while most IVD products (e.g. Class II and III) require clinical trials in China.
Compared to pharmaceuticals, medical devices and IVDs have a greater variety of categories and the regulatory & marketing strategy is often more complicated.
